L.P. Polhuis Archive
The L.P. Polhuis Archive has an ordinary yet emotive quality. It is one Dutch father’s collection of snap shots that were found by his son-in-law after his passing and then re-presented as an artist’s body of work. In their examination of the ordinary, these photographs reveal a compelling richness.

Nathan Lyons
The series “After 9/11” by Nathan Lyons documents visual responses from all over the United States after September 11th. The collection illustrates how ordinary forms such as flyers and reproductions of the American flag are the most natural response to this charged event.

Mike Mills
Artist and graphic designer Mike Mills co-opts existing forms like graffiti and billboards to present his personal messages. (Third and Fourth image below: from Mu Museum series in 2004. Photos by Todd Cole.)

Bas Jan Ader
Also dealing with sentiment, artist Bas Jan Ader’s work frequently pairs subjective, grand emotion with the cooler forms of conceptual art, providing an audience with a new point of entry into his content. Final image below: “I’m Too Sad To Tell You” (1971)
