M.O. was made in collaboration with Sarah Sandman. Formally, the poster is divided on a diagonal to give both Barack Obama and John McCain equal weight, as well as create tension with an actual American flag as the backdrop. McCain’s “M” is in Optima and Obama’s “O” is in Gotham, the respective typefaces of the two campaigns. We made this poster with the undergraduate students at RISD in mind, and installed it in a high traffic area. In an attempt to give young people a feeling of ownership over their vote, we included three pads for take-away: one for each candidate on top issues, as well as the state of Rhode Island voter registration form. Markers hung on the wall allowing this poster to became a place for transparent dialogue.
