A Broken Thing is a chandelier composed of donated broken objects. Lauren Mackler and I solicited for “broken things and their stories” from our network of friends and family as well as strangers in our neighborhood and on Craig’s List. To create the piece, we re-connected the broken objects to each other with the addition of string, wire, and tape to make a dense, colorful chandelier. Each broken object had an accompanying story, which was printed black on black (to be read when held up to the light) and the sheets were tucked under a small rug at the base of the sculpture for viewers to discover and read.
